The Unseen Side of Me

Hello. My name is Charlotte. I am 11 years old and I love acting. My mom started this blog for me so I can have a place to express myself and my desire to be creative.

My mom is typing this because 1) I'm a kid and it's easier for her to type than me 2) Spelling is super hard for me. There are a many things to get to know and love about me but let's get this one off the table. I'm Dyslexic. There are lots of things to learn about this thing called Dyslexia and the brain so my mom wanted to include this link from Reading Rockets to help people who want to learn more about Dyslexia/Reading Disabilities could...https://www.readingrockets.org/article/dyslexia-and-brain-what-does-current-research-tell-us

To sum it up, reading, spelling, and memorizing the sounds of new words (NAMES!) are hard for me. I work a lot harder than other kids just to make it in school or to learn lines for a play but...once I have it, by golly, it is stuck in my brain forever! Dyslexia is not because my mom didn't read to me or because I'm lazy. (Believe me, my mom is a literacy teacher and I don't get off easy at all!) Dyslexia runs in my family. My dad has it (and his mom was a reading teacher too!) Like many "brain things", there are different degrees of it--some people might struggle a little with it and some might struggle a lot.

Now that we've got that one covered, let me tell you what my Dyslexia DOES help me do. My mom and I read this article and we picked out a few of the positive sides of Dyslexia that fits me best. (Link-- http://dyslexiahelp.umich.edu/dyslexics/learn-about-dyslexia/what-is-dyslexia/the-many-strengths-of-dyslexics.) I know that I said above that memorizing words can be a challenge but memorizing stories is totally different. I can remember stories, plot lines, and characters in a way that lots of people can't. I also can read people a whole lot better than I can books; I study faces and gestures. I am very sincere and empathetic toward other people because I've been an underdog since my schooling began. These are a few "super powers" that Dyslexia gives me.

Dyslexia doesn't define me but I hope it helps you understand me.

 Peace, Lottie
